Artery Demo, First VersaPHY Work Group Meeting, Highlight Fourth Quarter Meeting in Taipei

The Trade Association’s fourth quarter meeting, held in Taipei, featured an innovative new consumer electronics demonstration from the Ulan Company, a Taiwan-based developer of IEEE 1394 peripherals.

Ulan has been working with the Trade Association to develop 1394b for home network applications, and in Taipei Ulan introduced the home network device Artery, which enables daisy-chain connection, connecting up to 16 TVs and 100 meters for each.

Bundled with Dolby Digital-plus, Artery works on both CAT5 and Coax, meaning no new wires are required and video and audio content are easily shared across the FireWire-based network.  According to ULAN chief Max Wang, who led the demonstration for TA members and for members of the Taiwan electronics press, Artery provides real-time QoS solutions for HDTV networks. The friendly user interface lists all connected devices and functionality.

The fourth quarter meeting in Taipei also featured the first official session of the VersaPHY Working group, which was established last summer. VersaPHY can be implemented with existing IEEE-1394 PHY silicon. The VersaPHY specification is designed to simply and cost-effectively connect devices to a 1394 network while coexisting with traditional, non-VersaPHY, devices.  The working group is developing VersaPHY-based applications and products, with initial focus on the VersaPHY Remote Sensor Profile and automotive camera applications.
