New FireWire Reference Table Technical Paper Ready
The 1394 Trade Association has published a comprehensive reference table white paper created to help designers optimize the use of the 1394 (FireWire) standard in their product designs.
The paper, entitled “Reference Tables for FireWire Isochronous Bandwidth Usage,” was developed by Dimitris Staikos of CodeMost, Ltd. It explains how FireWire bandwidth operates, with a set of reference tables that enable users to achieve their design objectives by correctly calculating the bandwidth required in a FireWire application that uses isochronous streaming. Tables are provided for users who intend to oversubscribe the available isochronous bandwidth to a specific extent.
“FireWire is the ideal specification for moving audio and video in any application, but correct calculations are crucial to design success,” said Staikos. “While they are fundamentally simple, these measurements involve some rudimentary math and require some solid understanding of how FireWire works. This paper and the accompanying tables will assure that FireWire is not underutilized or overutilized to the point where the application could experience performance challenges.”

1394 Automotive Compared with Proposed Ethernet AVB is Focus of New 1394 TA Technical Backgrounder
The Trade Association has released a new, comprehensive comparison of 1394 Automotive with the proposed Ethernet AVB specification for vehicle network applications. Completed in mid June, the new backgrounder details the benefits of 1394 Automotive, including flexibility, versatility, weight, cost and performance benefits, with the AVB proposal, which is based on the Ethernet standard. Entitled, “Proven 1394 Technology Trumps Ethernet AVB Potential for the Vehicle Network,” the four page article includes comparison diagrams and descriptions of why 1394 Automotive is the superior choice, noting that the cost benefits of Ethernet ‘simply do not translate to the automobile.”
In addition, manufacturers using 1394 Automotive can readily provide cost-effective ICs that meet or exceed automobile designers’ needs for topological flexibility, PHY layer, command and control protocols, and video capabilities.
The new backgrounder is posted on the 1394 TA website. It has also been picked up by Automotive Design|Line
