FireWire™ - Your High-Speed Connection To The Future (Bill Rose)
1394, also known as FireWire™, is simply the best available way to connect any device requiring a low cost, high speed, guaranteed quality of service network connection. With well over 1 billion ports shipped worldwide on over 600 million products, it is also one of the most common network connections available.

In this seminar you will learn about the latest applications being enabled by FireWire including high definition entertainment networks over coax, industrial cameras, automotive systems, and the latest developments such as 1600 and 3200 Mbps versions for connecting the latest high density hard drives, the low cost VersaPHY standard, and more. And you will learn that FireWire is the simplest way for your customers to connect your products reducing the need for complicated instruction manuals and customer service calls.

You will also discover that the 1394 Trade Association is here to help you develop and test your new products with an extensive set of standards and compliance tests available to your development team and periodic Plugfests so you can test your products with those from other companies.

Each presentation will be given by an expert in the field from among our members, people who have helped create and define the standards, and whose companies develop products, ICs, and applications used by millions of customers every day.

Finally you will learn that, contrary to the statements by a few analysts and competitors, the use of FireWire is growing every day as more and more manufacturers and developers discover FireWire’s ability to support the connections between even the most demanding (and cost sensitive) applications.
Brought to you by the 1394 Trade Association – Connect With The Best

Accelerating 1394 (Burke Henehan)
This presentation will describe what has been required to accelerate the bit rate of 1394 from the current 800Mbps (1Gbps cable bit rate) to 1600Mbps (2Gbps) and next to 3200Mbps (4Gbps). This shall include a short discussion of the technological advances, what exists today, and what must still be created. It will conclude with a comparison between relevant points between 4Gbps 1394b and USB3 at a proposed 5Gbps.

VersaPHY - Simply Connected (Richard Mourn)
This presentation provides an overview of the recently approved "VersaPHY Additions for 1394" 1394 Trade Association specification. VersaPHY is a 100% compatible extension to IEEE-1394 that enables simple devices to connect simply to the 1394 bus. This presentation covers the new VersaPHY packet formats, addressing, registers and interaction models. In addition, the presentation covers the first two profiles currently under definition: VersaPHY GPIO and I2C Master Profile specifications. These profiles define how to connect two very simple but very common applications to the 1394 bus using VersaPHY technology. In closing the presentation highlights the target markets and the availability of the technology.

1394 - Best Solution for Machine Vision Applications (Sam Liu)
High performance industrial automation control systems are common for control of precision motion, force, temperature, flow rate, etc. in automotive, semiconductor, electronics, pharmaceutical production and laboratory environments. Machine vision plays a crucial role for this automation control process. Compared with other machine vision applications such as GigE Vision, the technical superiority of 1394, such as easier integration and optimization, and excellent interoperability between systems from different vendors make it the ideal network protocol for intra-machine real-time control for today's advanced machine vision applications and other industry automation control applications.

Adoption of 1394 technology in industrial automation has been increasing significantly. The speaker will introduce innovative solutions for machine vision applications, such as 1394b optical repeater, that can transfer data up to 800 mbps through a glass fiber over 100 meters or longer distance, and 1394b repeater over a regular CAT5/5e/6 cable at a data rate of 400 Mbps up to 100 meters in length that offers bus power and data transfer all in one cable.

Streaming many HDTV programs through a home network (Hans van der Ven)
Why 1394 is more reliable than Ethernet?
Capabilities and advantages of CAT 5E, Coax and POF.
Co-existence of 1394 UWB signals with other TV signals on the same coax cable.

Benefits of 1394 in the PC (Dave Thompson)
The adoption of 1394 ports in desktop and portable PC's continues to grow on an annual basis driven by the unique advantages that 1394 holds over other serial bus technologies. Three unique to 1394 advantages are responsible for the growth of 1394 in PC's: high 1394 bus efficiency; practical bus power for a range of peripherals and guaranteed bandwidth for video transport.

The presentation will illustrate PC and peripheral examples of each of the three native advantages that 1394 has over alternative serial bus technologies in high volume products. Examples will be shown for PC products shipping today with 1394b at S800. The presentation will also highlight some of the lesser known, but very beneficial implementations of 1394 in the PC marketplace today.

1394 Automotive (Max Bassler)
This presentation will cover the compelling technical reasons why 1394 is the best choice for an automotive infotainment bus available. Technical highlights will be covered along with commercial examples of products that can lead to early implementation of this technology. This is meant to be an introduction for people not familiar with 1394 and its automotive applications.

IEEE 1394 Usage models for AV Content (Sean Zhang)
In recent years a growing number of CE products have been showing up in the market with 1394. In the US this trend is further advanced with the introduction of 1394 on ALL US HD digital cable STBs. In this presentation we will take a look at the usage models for AV sharing of content via 1394 in the CE space with a particular emphasis on:

  • Video recording
  • Video Distribution
  • 7.1 Channel Surround Sound
  • Security Cameras
  • IP over 1394
  • Home Automation

The better way of connecting to your external storage devices (Gene Lin)
Overview of the read/write performance over USB, 1394a and 1394b on external storage devices. Benchmark of CPU utilization over USB and 1394. Power limitations of USB and 1394. Introduction of Oxford Semiconductor and product roadmap.

1394 Quality Assurance (James Snider)
Overview of the three methods of obtaining a compliance logo from the TA: Plugfests/Compliance Workshops, Third Party Test Labs, Self Test Labs. Explain the function of the Quality Review Board. Present the two Compliance Logos. Give update on the latest additions to the Compliance Program: 1394b, new product groups (STBs), URL for compliant products. URLs for finding more information on the TA compliance program.

Please direct questions and comments to James Snider, Executive Director of the 1394TA.
