Fujitsu Leads Drive for 1394 at Convergence 2008
With a fully loaded cockpit simulator and a special demonstration of a 1394-based in-vehicle entertainment system, Fujitsu Microelectronics led the way for the 1394-Automotive standard at Convergence 2008 in Detroit Oct. 20-22.
The Fujitsu cockpit simulator featured all of the latest CAN, FlexRay, and 1394-Automotive technology, including a full audio and video system, parking assist, graphical navigation and other advanced capabilities – all in one comprehensive demo.

The 1394-compliant in-vehicle entertainment center featured a three-channel audio and three-channel video system using an Apple iPod and DVD player to deliver fully adjustable audio and video to two rear seats.
Fujitsu has staked out a strong leadership position in 1394-Automotive technology, based on its 400 Megabit/second 1394-compliant controller ICs, which are now in use at major automotive companies. The MB88388A and MB88389 (for audio) controllers are based on the original IDB-1394 specification, and were featured in the Convergence demonstrations.

Fujitsu also has been a long-time leader in the application of CAN technology, along with LIN and FlexRay. In order to provide a smooth transition into next generation in-car networks for body, chassis and power train controls, Fujitsu is now providing a CAN-FlexRay gateway feature with AUTOSAR compliant software in parallel with 1394 technology.
At a news conference held during the biennial conference, Phil Hughes, director of Fujitsu Microelectronics’ automotive business group, indicated that there is growing enthusiasm for the 1394 Automotive standard throughout the auto sector and among tier one suppliers. “We are convinced that it’s only a matter of time before 1394 proves itself as the best option for the vehicle,” he said. “The question is not if, but when.”
