FireWire-based Cameras are a Key Component in New Iris Scanning System From Sarnoff Corporation
One of the most innovative and interesting uses of FireWire comes in advanced vision systems. FireWire is now playing a major role in new iris scanning systems such as the recently-introduced Iris on the Move (IOM) technology developed at Princeton-based Sarnoff Corporation, which claims IOM can dramatically reduce the false match rates that have previously characterized iris recognition biometric technology. continued

We have just returned from the 2Q09 meeting in Dearborn, Michigan, the hometown of Ford Motor, where we completed a very well attended 1394 Auto Tech Seminar on the final day. A group of our top 1394 Auto leaders presented a compelling set of benefits of 1394 Auto for in-vehicle networking, to a receptive group that include Doug VanDagens, Ford's Connected Services Solutions director. All reports back were glowing. Thanks to Zeph Freeman, Max Bassler and the entire 1394 Auto team that created such a positive event despite the current slowdown in the auto industry. Make sure to read the coverage in this newsletter.
Meanwhile, the Marketing Working Group presented some preliminary market numbers for three market sectors that look good for further 1394 growth. These include Automotive, Industrial, and Networking. The numbers are still rough and we are looking for assistance from our membership in reviewing them for accuracy.
Additionally, we reviewed the progress being made to tap into social networks to promote 1394. Six videos have been posted to YouTube under the user name "FireWireExpert." These have been reasonably successful-- even with no efforts to promote them. Just recently, we deleted three of the videos, re-edited them, then reposted all three to make them more suitable for YouTube. The next stage is to start promoting them using social networks such as: digg, reddit, delicio.us, stumble upon and blogspot. Dimitris Staikos of CodeMost has been very helpful in getting this initiative going. We achieved 1000 hits from the six videos in less than two months. With promotion, we can anticipate a significant increase.
More on this soon.
